This role is based in our Sydney office with Hybrid working arrangement.
Role Purpose
The Spot Trader role sits within SmartestEnergy's global spot desk, a 24/7 trading function currently operating across Great Britain, continental European, and Australian energy markets. The role offers a fast-paced environment focused on short-term speculative and physical power trading. As part of a shift team, you'll actively manage market exposures, identify trading opportunities, and contribute directly to team profitability. This role demands strong analytical and numerical skills, a keen market instinct, and a drive to build expertise in fast-moving energy markets. While the initial focus will be on GB and European markets, the role will expand to include Australian asset management and NEM-based trading as the Australian portfolio comes online. Key Responsibilities:
Trading and Market Operations:
Execute proprietary short-term trading activities across GB, European, and Australian electricity markets to enhance team P&L
Engage in weather window, day-ahead and intra-day trading to manage positions and optimise costs
Assist in the optimisation and dispatch of physical assets, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), to maximise value
Participate in 24/7 market global coverage through shift rotations during local day time hours
Operational and Contractual Compliance:
Ensure accurate recording of transactions in the ETRM system
Execute trades and coordinate with bilateral counterparties
Perform operational tasks including contract notifications and volume nominations
Analytical Support:
Contribute to trading strategy development and execution
Assist in building analytical tools to improve trading performance and asset dispatch
Collaboration and Teamwork:
Work collaboratively across the global spot desk and trading functions to achieve profit targets and operational excellence
Experience:
Degree in a numerical field (Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, or related) Experience in short-term energy trading, ideally in electricity spot markets
Proficiency in Python, R, or SQL beneficial
Familiarity with data analysis and visualisation tools
Australian energy market experience (NEM/AEMO) desirable but not essential
Knowledge:
Understanding of electricity spot market mechanics and short-term trading dynamics
Interest in Australian energy market structure (NEM, AEMO, FCAS, 5-minute settlement)
Awareness of BESS and the role of storage in energy market optimisation
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; high attention to detail
